First Grade - Bugs

  1. First Grade Bugs
First Grade students have been closely looking at the structure of a bug. Bugs are symmetrical, meaning they are exactly the same on either side of their bodies. Bugs' bodies are composed of three parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.

In this project students were asked to...

    1. Choose bug
    2. Draw line of symmetry
    3. Fold image on line of symmetry
    4. Draw the head, thorax, and abdomen on paper in crayon. PRESS HARD!
    5. Connect the drawing
    6. Detail lines.
    7. Add color in paint and oil pastel

Fourth Grade- Alebrijes

Alebrijes

Over the past several weeks, fourth grade students have been working very hard to create alebrije inspired sculptures. Alebrijes are brightly colored folk art sculptures of creatures. Alebrijes are traditional art found in of art found in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Using the Oaxacan tradition as inspiration, 4th grade students...
1.Used foil and tape to create the form of an animal. This is called the armature, or skeleton of a sculpture.
2.Then students used plaster to create a smooth and strong surface.
3. Students painted the skin one tertiary color. Tertiary colors are a primary color plus a secondary color.
4.Lastly, using lines, shapes, and colors students paint the fine details.

Kindergarten- Self Portraits

Kindergarten Self-Portrait

In this art project, students learned about portraiture. A portrait is a painting, drawing,  or photograph of a person’s head. In this project students created self-portraits. A self-portrait is a painting, drawing, or photograph an artist creates of themselves.

To create these portraits students first created patterned backgrounds.  A pattern is a design that repeats and never changes.  Students then painted their self-portraits and collaged them onto their backgrounds.

Third grade- block printed pillows

Over several weeks, students learned and practiced the art of block printing. Inspired by the artist of Block Shop Textiles, students planned and designed blocks that contained shapes and were symmetrical. A block is a carved surface similar to a stamp. Students practiced printing their blocks on paper to become familiar with the process.

After mastering this practice, students created prints on fabric using textile ink. Students then learned and practiced sewing a simple seam using the blanket stitch.

Once finished, students learned about traditional Japanese resist dyeing called shibori.  Shibori is a style of fiber art that uses wooden block to create pressure on the fabric. This pressure resists the dye and creates controlled patterns on the fabric. When dry, students stuffed and hand sewed the pillows together.
