5th Grade Perspective Drawing

Perspective Drawing

In this project 5th grade students learn about one-point perspective.

Students gained inspiration for their cities from the contemporary artist Stephen Wiltshire. Mr. Wiltshire is an artist with autism who has the amazing ability to draw landscapes from memory. Using the rules of perspective drawing, Mr. Wiltshire creates large-scale realistic drawings of cities.

Using the same rules of perspective, the fifth grade-students created their cities. First students created a vanishing point in the center of their page. Students learned that in a one point perspective drawing, the sides of the buildings should be drawn as through they are converging together towards the vanishing point. Students also noticed, as objects went back in space, or closer to the vanishing point, they appeared smaller.

Fourth grade - Radial Mandala

Radial Mandala

Displayed are some of the amazing artworks created by the 4th grade students!

In this project students focused on one of the elements of art, space. In art there are two kinds of space: one positive and one negative. Positive space is the object in focus. Negative space is the space around the object that helps define the shape. Additionally, students discussed and used radial symmetry in their artworks. Radial symmetry is simply defined as repeating sections of line, color, or shape that originate from the center outward.

In this project students used their name or simple designs to create radially symmetrical drawings . Students examined how the letters of their names or aspects of their designs connected to create new areas of positive space.

First Grade - Rainbow Lines

In our first unit, of the school year we talked about and examined various types of lines. After reading the book Lines That Wiggle, we talked about how lines start with a dot and go for a walk. As the dot drags its feet, it makes a line. Sometimes the line is straight, and sometimes the line is bumpy. Students chose from a variety of lines and drew 5 across their page. During the second class, students looked at the order of the rainbow. In each space between the lines students painted a color of the rainbow, keeping in mind the rainbow's order. Check out how awesome they look!
